Creative industry as powerful as the financial services industry in the UK?

“In five years’ time, the creative industries [in the UK] could be as powerful as the financial services industry has been for the last 10 or 15 years,”

As snow threatens on a cold, grey day in the financial services capital, Sunday’s Observer offers a silver-lining for us creative types.

Communications minister, Lord Carter’s unveils a plan for a multi-billion-pound, high-speed broadband network, promising to turn the country into a digital nirvana by the time the London Olympics start.

Gordon Brown regards it as a national infrastructure project that will place Britain in the vanguard of the information age, a 21st-century equivalent of the huge public works programmes that helped lift the US out of the Depression.

Duplicate Content and Search Engines

I was ironing out some permission problems with a WordPress install the other day when I learned a little more about the .htaccess file.

If search engines find both www and non-www links from other sites to your site, they may treat https://YourSite.com and https://www.YourSite.com as two different websites with the same content. Trevor Ginn from Trevor Ginn advised me a while back that a site could be penalised for duplicate content.

New Brand Media in Top 69 Media Brands

We were quite chuffed when New Brand Media was included in a recent Top 69 Media Brands list.

I designed the identity 4 years ago when I started, just a personal blog about this ‘social web’ phenomenon. However, we have recently celebrated the first year as New Brand Media Ltd and for the first time I’ve had just a brief breather to reflect and turn my sloppy, half-hearted blog into what I hope will increasingly be a tool that really works for our business – still a long way to go I know!

Let us what you think of the new site?

In-Depth Look at Branding and Social Media

Late last year, Dan Newman of the Wanganui (New Zealand) School of Design submitted his Master’s thesis on the subject of “Malleable Branding: Realising the Potential of Online Social Networks and User Generated Content” (PDF, 92 pages). It’s not a lightweight read (which is appropriate given its original context), but it does provide a lot of solid background into the effect social media has had on branding in recent years.
